HOW IS GOLD & SILVER REALLY MADE?
Everyone knows if you want to get your hand on some gold and silver, you probably need a gold
or silver mine. But what comes after the ore is hauled out of the dark mine tunnels, and before
you see a shiny gold bar or beautiful silver jewelry? That’s where the “mill” and “refinery”
enter into the process. The mill is where the ores are crushed and pulverized so that different
processes and machines can extract the gold and other metals from the rock. The “refinery” is
where the separated gold is further refined, melted and poured into a bar.
At the Gold & Silver Refinery Tour you not only get to learn how these processes work, but see
and run some of the actual equipment used in the process, all at your own pace. The Mayflower
Mill was built in 1929 from Oregon Fir timber and is one of only a few such processing plants
from that era in existence. In fact, it is so special the National Park Service designated it a
National Historic Landmark!
Between 1930 and 1991 the Mill & Refinery produced over $6 Billion Dollars in Gold and
Silver!
